And
it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying: Thou shalt construct a
ship, after the manner which I shall show thee, that I may carry thy people
across these waters. (1 Nephi 17:8)
That bit at the end – that
I may carry thy people” – struck me. It is as though God uses the idea of a
boat to symbolize Himself and how He will carry and protect Nephi’s family from
the elements.
Looked at it that way,
anything that carries us can be a symbol of God—our transportation:
cars, buses, airplanes, boats, etc. And anything that protects can symbolize
God as well—our clothes, our houses, fortifications, armor, etc.
