For behold, I have workings in the spirit, which doth weary me even that all my joints are weak, for those who are at Jerusalem; for had not the Lord been merciful, to show unto me concerning them, even as he had prophets of old, I should have perished also. (1 Nephi 19:20)
The thing that impresses me about this verse is how Nephi
continues to think of those people he knew and left behind at Jerusalem. It
must have been a solemn thing to know the people one knows have either been
killed or carried away captive.
And he doesn’t think of them with any kind of scorn here;
you can tell that he sees that he might have been one of them, and it was the
Lord’s mercy that saved him from suffering the same fate. And too, he realized that if he didn’t
stay faithful, he could still perish. You get a sense that he felt the
precariousness of spirituality that required continual nurturing.

I look forward to meeting Nephi when I graduate. He is one of my top five heroes from the scriptures.
Me too.
