4 And it came to pass that when they had come down into the valley of Nimrod the Lord came down and talked with the brother of Jared; and he was in a cloud, and the brother of Jared saw him not.5 And it came to pass that the Lord commanded them that they should go forth into the wilderness, yea, into that quarter where there never had man been. And it came to pass that the Lord did go before them, and did talk with them as he stood in a cloud, and gave directions whither they should travel.. (Ether 2:4-5)
I noticed when I was reading this that in v4 it says the
Lord talked with the brother of Jared, and then in v5 it says the Lord talked
with “them.” It looks like it wasn’t
just the brother of Jared who was worthy to hear the voice of the Lord. Others in his company were spiritually
prepared to hear the Lord too, so they got to experience it too. Can you imagine what a group they were
if many of them were ready to have the Lord talk to them directly?
I think this shows us that while the Lord speaks to the
prophets, He also wants to speak to the rest of us as well.

Could it be that The Lord gave instructions to the brother of jared commanding "them" that they should go forth instead of litterally commanding them himself... ?
That is another way of looking at it, so yes, that could be.
